Few things are more exciting and overwhelming than the prospect of becoming a parent. What follows is some tried and true advice to guide you through the maze of parenting.
Think about what you’re teaching your child. It’s important to build a sense in your children that you are trustworthy.
Lay your child on the counter in the kitchen and lay a rolled towel under his neck; use the faucet water and put it on his hair and scalp. This technique is beneficial for toddlers who are afraid to dunk their head or be doused with water.
Use the kitchen sink, so your child has plenty of space to lie down on a towel spread on the counter. You should also place a rolled towel beneath his neck. Then, wash and rinse his hair using the faucet or sprayer. Doing this can help alleviate the anxiety countless toddlers have about being submerged underwater.
If you are away from home with a young child, try to retain their eating and sleeping routines if you can. Infants and children are often very stressed by the disruption of schedules traveling causes. Upholding bedtime rituals can make the experience far more pleasant for yourself and your child.
If you child has difficulty cutting their teeth, give them cucumbers, carrots or even sour pickles inside of a mesh teether. While various other methods also work, your baby will use a teething device longer if it has some taste to it. The longer a child uses this tasty teether, the more relief they will feel and the happier you both will be.
Children in the preschool years do not handle transitions well. In many cases, shifting between projects or tasks can be so upsetting that your child may even wind up in tears.
Although difficult, it is important for parents of college-bound students not to exert pressure on their child to attend a specific school. When teens feel they are being overly controlled, they tend to go in the opposite direction, sometimes out of rebellion.
If a toddler is becoming bored with his or her toys or isn’t playing with them as much, rotate them. Most toys will hold your toddler’s interest for a few days, at most, unless it’s one of his or her favorites. If you rotate toys they will seem new to the toddler and you will not have to buy them all of the time.
Never feed your children soda in any form, whether regular or diet. Your young child should drink milk, juice or water to get the vitamins and nutrients he or she needs.
Change things up often by moving the toys around or incorporating new toys into a child’s toy box. Toddlers may not be interested in a toy if they play with it a lot, unless they really love it. By rotating toys, your child will see them as new and exciting again when you reintroduce them. This will save you from having to buy more and more toys.
When traveling with small children, it will be easier to get through the security process if you use the line designated specifically for families. Many airports have lanes specifically for families. This will allow you to take your time. Also, you avoid incurring the wrath of other impatient travelers. Everything has to be scanned, including shoes and the kids’ car seats.
Don’t expect an instant bond with your stepchildren. Often, children continue to want their parents to reunite. By going slowly and not trying to accelerate a bond, you and your stepchild will gradually learn to coexist and perhaps even become buddies.

As a parent, understand that not every child wants to be surrounded by people. There are many children who are much more introverted, which is perfectly acceptable. Though do pay attention to make sure your child is aware of what is going on around them. Consider taking your child to their doctor or to a therapist to ensure there isn’t something more problematic at the heart of their antisocial behavior.
Have your child sign up for a team sport to improve his confidence. Giving your support and encouragement at your children’s athletic activities gives them a foundation of fond memories and builds character for a lifetime.
Take junk food out of the house. This will help encourage your family to eat healthier. If candy, chips and cookies are not readily available, your child will probably not ask for them as often. Make it a point that sweets and other junk food are only for certain holidays, including Halloween and Christmas.
Getting angry doesn’t help most parents become better disciplinarians. They should keep their anger firmly under control when they relate to their children. Anger displayed in the presence of children can damage their self-esteem and provides a negative model for dealing with frustration. It is an especially poor parenting choice when dealing with an honest mistake, or a little accident, made by a child.
If a child suffers from ADD, ADHD or other behavioral conditions, one thing that a parent can do to help is keep the child occupied. These children have high energy and little ability to control their impulses; if their energy isn’t redirected in positive ways, they may act out or engage in negative behaviors. Encouraging your child to play outdoors at a park, or partake in some other physical activity can really help channel extra energy in a healthy, positive way.

Once you child knows what to expect in a bedtime routine, there will be less resistance to going to bed.
